Who should answer Harnack's questions on behalf of the Christian East? ... The intelligentsia of the Christian East, which creates its general culture, must give an account of what it is owing for its cultural work to its own religious history and how the spirit and yield of this work, which for the West is primarily embodied in Dostoyevsky and Tolstoy, should be related to the values of the Occident: whether Orient and Occident are hostile to each other, or whether both form a higher, basically identical unit.
