- Summary/Abstract:The study aims to trace the historical development of Sliven in 19th centuries. In the first half of 19th century the Ottoman Empire faced periodic crises that affected its economic development in different parts of its territory. In fact, from the end of the 18th century until 1829 the Ottoman Empire had several wars with Russia and this military situation directly affected the Rumeli provinces. The rule of Sultan Mahmud II (1808–1839) is associated with particularly active reform activities, which affected all aspects of political and social life of Ottoman society. On the basis of unpublished Ottoman register material from 19th century the focus of this study is concentrated on the economic development of Sliven in the 1830s. The information about demographic development is extracted from nüfus defters dated in 1831, 1833, 1837, 1841 from Ottoman archive in Istanbul. The article reconstructs the professional characteristics of the Sliven population in the 1830s. The place that Sliven occupied in the Ottoman provincial administrative system is determined by its demographic and economic development. The geographical location of Sliven and its role of an important economical center predetermined the place that the city occupied in the economic infrastructure of the Empire. Again, on the basis of new source material, the parameters of local government functioning are outlined.

- Summary/Abstract:A group of Bulgarian high-school students in Odessa (Nayden Gerov, Dobri Chintulov, et al.) made their first steps in literature and thus initiated the new Bulgarian poetry in the 1840s. Other men of letter studied here in the following decades; this town had a specific presence in Vasil Drumev’s novel Student and Benefactors; from here Svetoslav Milarov send long articles to the newspaper Pravo (Law) in Istanbul. Later, during the government of Stefan Stambolov, a new emigrant group was formed for a short period in this town on the shore of the Black Sea; Ivan Vazov participated in it, and here he started writing his famous novel Under the Yoke. This paper draws attention to the way how Bulgarians in Odesa saw this town, to what extent they were interested in Ukrainian culture, and how this interest developed over time.

- Summary/Abstract:The paper charters in detail and provides numerous examples regarding the development of several thematic fields that are usually deemed peripheral to the poetry of the Bulgarian 19th century. One of them is connected to conceptions of time, era, and chronological period. Since Revival period poets often focalise their own currency, this analysis pays particular attention to the poetic transformations in revealing their awareness of the present moment and its thematic variations.

- Summary/Abstract:The main focus of the article is on the interpretation and analysis of the manuscript textbooks during the period of the Bulgarian National Revival. Special emphasis is placed on the unpublished teaching aids of the prominent Bulgarian authors and teachers Dobri Chintulov and Nayden Gerov in the context of the manuscript tradition and the new Bulgarian secular education. The archival legacy of the two intellectuals and public figures gives reason to raise the subject of the place and role of chrestomathies and didactic textbooks in the education of students in the 19th century. One of the conclusions I reached is that, unlike the published Revival textbooks with several reprints, the aids from the archive of D. Chintulov and N. Gerov had their distribution and had their impact on the contemporary Bulgarian public and the development of the new Bulgarian culture. Another conclusion is that the still little studied notebooks appeared and circulated at least two decades earlier, in the 1850s, than those published in the 1870s. A third important point that the article focuses on is the interesting parallel and interrelationship between the creation of the diverse curricula of a secular character in the grade schools in Koprivshtitsa, Plovdiv, Sliven and Yambol and the school subjects represented in them on one hand, and the preserved handwritten notebooks and textbooks of the two Odessa graduates, D. Chintulov and N. Gerov, precisely as a result of their teaching and confirmation of a modern pedagogical model, on the other. N. Gerov created one of the first Bulgarian grade schools in Koprivshtitsa, where he taught in the period 1846–1850, and in 1850 he became a teacher at the Plovdiv School, which was named ‘SS. Cyril and Methodius’ on his initiative. After his return from Odessa, D. Chintulov was invited to be a teacher in his hometown of Sliven in the period 1850–1858, and then he became the head teacher of the grade school in Yambol. Following the cultural history of the teaching careers of the two Bulgarian intellectuals we come across identical regularities – it is precisely these that give me a more accurate and clear look not only at the emergence and development of textbook literature but also at the gradual formation of the new type of critical and aesthetic perception through the period of the Bulgarian National Revival.

- Summary/Abstract:Bulgarian theatre emerged after the mid-nineteenth century. The first theatrical displays were greeted with mixed reception - from sincere joy at given performances to fear of the damage they would cause. This contrast of opinions stemmed from the basic opposition of “the domestic and the foreign” for the second half of the Bulgarian 19th century, on the basis of which the new societal and cultural model of social and personal relations was built.Theatre was perceived as an element of European modernity, i.e. as something foreign to traditional Bulgarian cultural practices, and its recognition as part of Bulgarian cultural life took time. How did this happen? The thematic fields that make up the plots of Bulgarian Revival dramaturgy are also based on the opposition and evaluative comparison of the domestic and the foreign. The most commonly used model of a negative character in Revivalist drama is that of the foreigner. Byzantine characters are the traditional negative characters in historical dramas. In later plots, the Byzantines are replaced by representatives of the Greek clergy, who come to embody the generalized dramaturgical image of the foreigner - the Greek. The Revivalist present is also problematized through the theme of European modernity. Instead of a ready and easy model to follow, modernity turns out to be a threat to the “domestic”. It necessitates changes in appearance, language, family and social relations. The Christomatic example of a dramaturgical interpretation of this predicament is D. Voynikov's drama The Misunderstood Civilization. After all, urban culture was making inroads into Bulgarian society and for a little over a decade, the theatre established its place in Bulgarian cultural life. Already in the 1880s, it became an important element of the cultural policy of the young Bulgarian state.

- Summary/Abstract:The period, which is under review, is marked by two main trends: the publication of folklore and ethnographic materials, on one hand, and theoretical justification, on the other hand. A series of publications until the end of the 19th century laid the foundations of Bulgarian ethnology. At the same time, Rakovski’s “Indicator” and Ivan Shishmanov’s paper provide a scientific justification for the need to collect, record and store ethnographic materials. The article examines the works on Bulgarian folklore of Yuriy Venelin, Ivan Bogorov, Zahariy Knyazheski, Petko Slaveykov, Dimitar Miladinov and Konstantin Miladinov, Lyuben Karavelov, Kuzman Shapkarev, Dimitar Marinov, etc. It should be noted that a large number of collectors of folklore materials do not have a university education. However, by the end of the 19th century, the foundations of the sciences of ethnology and folkloristics were formed in Bulgaria.

- Summary/Abstract:The study "Bulgarian Fine Art in the 19th Century: the Leap from Medieval Imagery to European Visual Culture" provides a comparative analysis of the development of Bulgarian painting in relation to European art. The study is carried out through a juxtaposition and visual comparison of the characteristics and visual qualities of certain works taken for analysis. The methods of painting, the construction of the composition, and the borrowed techniques taken by the Bulgarian masters from the artists in Europe are compared. One of the most complex and remarkable periods in Bulgarian history is brought into focus as how the artists managed after a long stagnation to catch up with already developed European standards in art. In an effort to overcome cultural backwardness - a new generation of artists made a great and important leap in the development of Bulgarian fine art. A parallel is drawn between Europe, which has had time to quietly shape its art, and Bulgaria, which after a long slumber is decisively uplifting and transforming its cultural heritage. On the basis of this analysis, we get a visual example of borrowed practices and the development of Bulgarian painting. We trace how it progressed along with socio-cultural changes.

According to the newly acquired manuscript of D. Dobrev, rifle workshops were equipped with blowers, anvils, and various tools. Carbines, forged blunderbusses, long and thin “boyliya” rifles, long-barrel pistols, “syungiya” rifles, and the expensive “Dzhuver” rifles are produced. Arms production has a significant role in the economic life of Sliven. The nascent Bulgarian pre-industrial manufacturing industry led to glamorous economic, political and cultural events. The last weapon, a hunting rifle, was made by the old masters of Sliven. It belongs to Georgi Makaschiev and is kept in the Regional Museum.

- Page Range:219-231
- No. of Pages:13
- Keywords:training; committee; society; arming; students
- Summary/Abstract:The article focuses on a relatively short historical period – 1878/1879, i.e. the first two years after the Liberation of Bulgaria and the creation of the Third Bulgarian State. The topic is intricately related to the processes that instilled the Bulgarians with confidence to defy the Great Powers in the name of their national ideal and paved the road for the unification of the Principality of Bulgaria and Eastern Rumelia. The arming of students is a perfect example of the transformation of chaotic youth into a new order holding promises for the future. To outline the historic framework of the events that led to the establishment of the gymnastics societies in Southern Bulgaria I would briefly review the preliminary Treaty of San Stefano and the agreements of the Congress of Berlin. Having established the international mise en scėne I would then move on to the local scene and the Unity Committees (1878-1879), focusing on the creation, the activity and the legacy of their extreme factions – the gymnastics and shooting societies, especially the Sliven society “Lev” in the Sliven (male) Gymnasium. This period is a challenge to historians due to the scarcity of primary sources and the fact that the ensuing political struggles and changes have affected historical research traditionally subdued to politics. This paper analyses and tells the stories behind authentic photos, documents and memories from the time period and scientific studies from the 20th to the 21st. c.

- No. of Pages:15
- Keywords:Vladimir Drumev Varbanov; memory; personal history; artefacts; portraying
- Summary/Abstract:This article tries to represent the image of Vladimir Drumev Varbanov, the revolutionary in Botev's armed company, an Isperih resident with a sleepless spirit, avoiding the mythologising characteristic of the era of the Bulgarian revival: ‘revivalist – rebel’, ‘sleep–wakefulness’, ‘disgrace – glory’. Therefore, the chosen research approaches are anthropological and comparative: looking into history through memory, personal history, and what has been preserved as artefacts in a Bulgarian museum – the Historical Museum – Isperih. As artefacts and people are witnesses of time through which history becomes more tangible, the article compares the (mis)coincidence between memory and artefact without observing the chronological principle in portraying one of the most interesting personalities who lived in Isperih. The memory and the artefact look at each other to reconcile the ‘revivalist’ and the ‘rebel’.

- Keywords:Sultana Ivanova Gorova-Petrovic; the flag of Stefan Karadzha; revolutionary movement; women in the Bulgarian Liberation movement; rebel band flag
- Summary/Abstract:This article constitutes a historical study, whose goal is finding the historical reality in regard to the sewing of one of the iconic objects of the revolutionary movement in Romania - the flag of Stefan Karadzha’s band of rebels. The author uses an analytical method of chronological research and historical description in order to reach the conclusion that Sultana Ivanova Gorova-Petrovic was the person who sewed the flag of the rebel band flag. As a result of this historical study, there is a well-argued, systematised narrative which outlines and analyses a series of chronologies, in which the author objectively seeks, studies and reveals the objective cause and effect links which define them as truth. Attention is paid in this work to the family tree and the links between Sultana Petrovic, the revolutionary movement in the 19th century and the revolutionaries in Bulgaria and Romania. Through studying various historical data, literature, testimonies of contemporaries and scientific publications, the author reaches the conclusion that there is irrefutable historical evidence showing that the studied person is the one who sewed the rebel band flag. Photographs, letters, written evidence, family trees and testimonies of contemporaries for the period 1814-1975 are used in the work. The wide temporal scope of the study gives an opportunity to present a well-argued and influential role not only of the studied person but the participation of Bulgarian women in general in the Bulgarian Liberation movement. A successful attempt has been made to perform a comparative analysis of the possibility of error in the translation of historical data by using transliteration from Romanian to Bulgarian. Due to the characteristics of the study conducted in the article, the goal, the nature of the gathered data, the analysis and the development of each of them, it is certain that the result is representative and there is every reason to claim that it reflects the reality.
