Summary/Abstract: The book The Birth of Romanticism in Poland and the World brings together texts presented at the Fourth Zofia Trojanowiczowa Symposium, on the bicentenary of the publication of Adam Mickiewicz's Ballads and Romances. The authors of the texts look at the dynamics of the emergence of Romanticism not only in Poland, but also in Europe and beyond. Their interest is in the multiplicity of contexts and discourses in which Romanticism was entangled from the very beginning of its existence. They propose to reflect not so much on the Romantic 'breakthrough' or the 'primordialities of Romanticism', but on the various origins of Romanticism itself and the phenomena that accompanied it, such as the paradigm shifts of cultural memory, changes in the communication model and types of education, and the role of literary translation. They are also interested in the process of the birth and formation of Romanticism (as well as its re-birth) associated with particular places (e.g. Vilnius) and institutions. They recall both great literary debuts and brilliant literary works, as well as the wider creative circles that contributed to the formulation of new ideas and concepts. This book devoted to the birth of Romanticism opens up a wide range of possibilities: it encourages interdisciplinary approaches and reflections using various methodological ideas. Of particular importance here is the comparative perspective in observing the birth of national Romanticisms in Europe (taking into account Romanticisms that are less often cited in Polish Studies discussions) and the New World (American Romanticism).
