Summary/Abstract: This monograph deals with the topic of media literacy and media education. The main aim of the theoretical part is to present arguments in favour of continuous development of media literacy within education and to define ways of strengthening it in educational practice. In this sense, the topicality of media education is emphasized primarily in terms of its content fulfillment, which should respond to the current needs of pupils or teachers that result from the social context. On the empirical level, the main objective was to find out to what extent pupils of the upper primary school are knowledgeable about selected current issues of media education and media literacy and what is their behavior on the Internet and social networks in the context of selected current issues. Based on the expertise presented in the theoretical part of the monograph and the results of the research presented in the empirical part, possible strategies leading to the development of media literacy and the improvement of the teaching of media education in Czech primary schools were developed. Among other things, the monograph provided evidence for the necessity of emphasizing the need to prevent risky virtual communication not only for girls but also boys, to educate pupils about the issue of influencers' influence on their behavior, to discuss with pupils the limits of freedom of expression on the Internet, to redefine and update the concept of the expected outcomes of the cross-curricular theme of Media Education, and more. This monograph deals with the topic of media literacy and media education.
