Summary/Abstract: ‘Kaktus’ was one of the Polish satirical magazines that appeared on the wave of thaw. It was published from 1957 to 1960. The aim of the book is to answer the question to what extent the ‘escape’ into a satirical costume allowed the artists to avoid censorship interventions. The answer to the question is provided by the reconstruction of the hitherto unknown image of "Kaktus", emerging from the archival documents of the Voivodeship Office for the Control of the Press, Publications and Performances in Poznań (WUKPPiW). The comparative material consists of 174 issues of the periodical and a collection of cryptotexts, i.e. confidential censorship documents that evaluated the articles from the magazine. The collection is a valuable testimony to how the authorities dealt with the so-called anti-regime poetics that came to the fore after October 56. The file includes not only articles, essays, columns, cartoon jokes, satirical commentaries that have appeared in print, but – more importantly – their versions submitted for censors' evaluation. This allows me to compare the original versions with the published versions.
