Summary/Abstract: In accordance with the principle of separation of powers in a system of electoral representative democracy, the parliament (the first branch), the government (the second branch) and the judiciary (the third branch) are the pillars of the institutional arrangements of democratic states. Separation of powers implies that each branch of government is independent of the other two. At the same time, their mutual relations are based on the principle of mutual checks and balances. These same principles apply to Serbia.
