Summary/Abstract: The subject matter of the monograph is situated between literary studies and history of medicine. Its aim is to determine the functions carried out by rhetorical and narrative elements in late 16th- and 17th-century Spanish-language medical treatises. The monograph how the authors of these texts sought to use their knowledge of the humanities to foster a bond of trust with the reader akin to the relationship between a doctor and a patient, in accordance with the principles of Renaissance medical deontology. The monograph includes an attempt to juxtapose the principles of 16th-century medical deontology with the concept of narrative medicine, which postulates giving importance to storytelling in the doctor-patient relationship and supports the inclusion of literary studies in medical education. This volume is therefore part of medical humanities, a field that continues to gain popularity."
