Summary/Abstract: The disappearance of Ivan Stambolic, former President of Serbia, on August 25, 2000, on the eve of major political changes in Serbia, is a political crime of the first order. The equal indifference of both the previous and current regimes towards this unique crime does not allow for a clear line to be drawn between them - political, legal and moral. The suspicion is deeper, the revolt restrained but more concentrated. Hence it is a mere illusion that the memory of the crime against Ivan Stambolic will fade away in the gloomy landscape of today's Serbia, or that it will be drowned in a great criminal enterprise. On the contrary, the anatomy of this individual crime is important not only as a grain of truth in the past and present, but also as a sign of the times to come.
