Summary/Abstract: The marketing treats consumer behavior as part of the sphere of economy. In this course, directed to communication and PR students, I start from a different premise. I present production and consumption, as well as consumer behavior as part of human communication, a culturally defined human activity, which has passed through historically different stages. I work with the results of modern social science, sociology, especially social economy, but also anthropology, which describes and compares the economic behaviour of different people and cultures. In order to present the making of consumer behavior, I also synthesize some results of social history.
