- Summary/Abstract:Defining the subtle shades of nostalgia in the works of writers in exile, the author of the article discusses the category of venerable poetry by Florian Śmieja in the broad context (inter alia, of works by Adam Zagajewski, Czesław Miłosz, Zofia Bohdanowiczowa or Tadeusz Śliwiak). Employing the example of two poems, titled Ziemie utracone [The Lost Lands] and Spóźniona arka [The Late Ark], he shows the rescuing power of “sublime yearning” in the works of the poet, who has lived in Canada for many years.

- Summary/Abstract:A common theme of Zambrzycka’s poems is the problem of bidding farewell, leaving, deserting. The authoress of the article has made the repeated forms of expression as well as the imagery indicating these borderline experiences the focal points of her text. The motifs present in the poems centre around the following issues and topics: the recurrence of portraits of relatives preserved in the memory of the lyrical “I”, the role of objects in the process of remembering, and the function of voice and silence in experiencing one’s absence.

- Summary/Abstract:The present article addresses the question of family myth in the works by Marek Kusiba — a Polish poet, who has been creating his works in Canada for many years. Interpreting mainly the poem Rajskie in the context of the still unpublished volume of poetry of the same title, the authoress of the article explores autobiographical elements — mainly connected with family, emigration (meta-literary and historical) — which constitute one of the most important foundations of this lyrical proposal. The biographical optics, which in this poetry has always been firmly embedded in the cultural context, usually inspires universal findings.

- Summary/Abstract:This literary sketch is devoted to the book titled Moja prywatna Ameryka [My Private America] (London, 1966), which unfortunately is not available in its entirety in Polish editions. In the initial part of the sketch, the author focuses on the reception of both the aforementioned book, and the collection titled Cygańskim wozem [Gypsy Cart], issued six months earlier. He argues that Wierzyński’s “American” sketches depict the poet’s way of accustoming himself to that country. Moreover, he tries to observe particular stages in the poet’s settling down in America and subsequent circles of friends, who lived in Wierzyński’s neighbourhood or further away. By delineating their profiles, the poet showed the specificity of American artistic and political life, as well as the diversity of American artistic proposals.

- Summary/Abstract:In the article Wars from Afar. “W imię Ojca” by Kazimierz Wierzyński the poem — written by the poet in exile — undergoes an in-depth analysis and interpretation. In the initial part of his deliberation, the author of the article examines semantic possibilities of W imię Ojca [In the Name of the Father] — restitution of tradition, reinterpretation of symbols, intertextual contexts. The poem turns out to be the poet’s bitter settlement with the romantic manner of poetizing, historiosophical interpretation of the order of history, and an array of archaic characters. However, in his poem of prayerlike character, Wierzyński shows the way to discovering good solutions that can lead along three routes: the land variant — the American dream of an expatriate; the history variant — an affirmative reiteration of Józef Piłsudski’s poetical phrases; the religion variant — kenosis as solace. The author of Krzyżei miecze [Crosses and Swords] treads these routes and returns to the sources of peace, soothes his mind and emotions, which at the beginning of the text were brought by him to the highest registers of bitterness, despair, and melancholy.

- Summary/Abstract:The text is an attempt at scrutinizing the funeral oration Kazimierz Wierzyński delivered over Jan Lechoń’s grave after his suicide. Beginning with an analysis of the relationship between Jan Lechoń and Kazimierz Wierzyński, the authoress interprets the speech, delivered on June 12, 1956. She examines elements of romantic tradition in Wierzyński’s text, as well as its relationships with poetical works, and juxtaposes the speech with commemoratory texts of both poets.

- Summary/Abstract:In her analysis of Anna Frajlich’s collection Łodzią jest i jest przystanią [It is a Boat, and It is a Harbour], the authoress of the article distinguishes — echoing Maja Elżbieta Cybulska – three phases in the poetess’s biography: the stages of “dilemma,” “anger,” and “reflection.” The stage of “dilemma” has its beginning in 1968, and for the poetess, it is a generational experience. The stage of “anger” is the period when Frajlich spends the first years in a foreign country, when her disagreement with the state of affairs arises as well as the need to re-establish her professional and social position. The third stage of “reflection,” which comes no sooner than when the relative stability in her life is reestablished, resulting in the flourishing of creativity, and in cooperation with Polish and international cultural and publishing institutions.

- Summary/Abstract:The past constitutes one of the main themes that consolidate the poetic world of Anna Frajlichas it constantly worries the poetess, claims its place in the presence, and haunts her progress towards the future. The past is brought back to life especially when it seems to have just been forgotten. The subject matter of the article are objects and places that appear in poems written by the authoress of Ogrodem i ogrodzeniem [The Garden and the Fence]. The former revive memory, rescue it from oblivion, and get transferred to the future. The latter continually return when the poetess travels — be it actually or mentally — to her homeland. However, she does not stop to dwell upon times gone by. She organizes the past in her memory, but also does not allow anything that was lost to incapacitate the presence.

- Summary/Abstract:This literary sketch is devoted to Czesław Miłosz’s translations of Anglo-American poetry, which the poet incorporated into Nieobjęta ziemia [Unattainable Earth] — one of silvic poems in his literary oeuvre. Against the background of the whole collection, two quoted here translations of poetry by David Henry Lawrence and Walt Whitman mark themselves as especially interesting. The article is an attempt to decipher the author of Trzy zimy [Three Winters’] intention as well as to answer the question of what determined the choice of these particular poems from amongst the realm of Anglo-American lyrical poetry. The authoress tries to discern whether, and if yes, in what sense, Miłosz identifies with Whitman’s and Lawrence’s ruminations or even certain philosophy that can be construed based on their poems.

The experience of encountering the Soviet occupation zone in the East and the American continent in the second half of the 1960s could not remain without consequences for both the subject and for the places, which his imagination was taking possession of. Changes of place turned the writer into a migrant, influenced his way of interpreting reality, showed the complicated issues of identity transformations and auto-identification entanglements inscribed in the story and autobiographical narrative “about encountering” the Other.

- Summary/Abstract:In the historically sanctioned discourse, presenting the masculine ethos of the writer in exile, the question of female immigration narrative, the female point of view, also demands careful reflection. Danuta Mostwin’s novels constitute the narration of women about women. This manner of story-telling emphasizes duality of the accepted role. This is because in this prose on the one hand we deal with showing the existential dimension of emigration (a woman speaks about women, she speaks overtly), and on the other hand — we find ourselves in the field of textualization of emigration: the woman is a writer and she is talking about women experiencing the world (she speaks covertly). That bond between existence and writing reveals a new kind of reading — the emigrational femininity and female writing in exile.

- Summary/Abstract:The article recalls an unfinished trilogy by Jerzy Kossowski titled Ta krew nie plami [This Blood Does Not Stain], telling the story of Polish immigrants in Brazil in the 1930s, of the hard life of people in the wilderness of virgin forest, and of their patriotic commitment, which makes them abandon their American home after the outbreak of World War II, return to Europe and join the Polish army in France. The author of the sketch briefly describes the history of Polish emigration to Brazil and characterizes the most important literary works portraying the life of immigrants in this country. The main part of the article is an analysis of two novels that make up the aforementioned cycle: Wici w puszczy [Wici in the Forest] (1954) and W Wogezach straszy nocami [It Haunts in the Vosges at Night] (1955). Both novels are treated here as a literary picture of life in a foreign land and, at the same time,as the testament to their author’s deep attachment to his homeland.

- Summary/Abstract:In American ethnic literature, food — apart from fulfilling a biological function — also hasa cultural role. Cookery, which includes all activities related to preparing a meal, serving or consuming it, but also simply treating food as nourishment, is an expression of cultural belonging and attachment to a particular ethnic group. A kind of culinary nostalgia is also observable in the prose of Leslie Pietrzyk and Anthony Bukoski, contemporary American writers with Polish roots. The foods shown in the debut novel by Pietrzyk and selected stories by Bukoski serve as indicators of ethnicity, specific emotional bridges, thanks to which the characters can be transported to the times of their childhood, thus being defined anew and achieving a sense of rootedness in a strange for them American land.

- No. of Pages:16
- Summary/Abstract:The article describes a common episode in the biography of the poet Jan Lechoń and the essayist and painter Józef Czapski. Representing the same generation, the artists did not take a liking to each other. Before World War II, their contacts were sporadic at best. In 1950, they met again in New York, which was Lechoń’s emigration residence. Czapski visited North America to raise money for the functioning of “Kultura” magazine in Paris. For this purpose, he was meeting with the Polish diaspora and giving lectures, in which he testified about the Katyń massacre. He included notes on the observed specificity of American culture in the quoted essays. For Lechoń, meetings with Czapski constituted a big mental and emotional problem, the evidence of which can be found in the poet’s Diary, kept regularly (at his doctor’s recommendation). After many years, reading that same diary helped.

- Summary/Abstract:The article “American Disquiets of Jan Józef Szczepański” is an attempt to reconstruct the writer’s judgments and opinions on the changes that swept through the American culture in the late 1960s. The writer, diverging alone from the beaten tourist tracks, observes America; what testifies to it is his direct account of a diarist. When confronted with his subsequent literary texts, fragments of Szczepański’s Dzienniki [Diaries] reveal the often critical attitude of the writer towards the cultural and civilizational wonders of the United States.

- Author(s):Monika Wiszniowska

- No. of Pages:15
- Summary/Abstract:Polish reportages, in which the authors have tried to build an interesting and non-stereotypicalimage of the United States, are few. The reasons for this state of affairs seem complex. What discourages contemporary reporters from breaking the stereotypes is perhaps the fact that today the United States are the most exploited by mass culture place on Earth. Maybe the popular thinking that we already know everything there is to know about the US also still lingers. In 1997, Paweł Smoleński published Opowieści amerykańskie [American Tales], in 2009, Małgorzata Szejnert had her reportage Wyspa klucz [Key Island] released, and at the turn of the year 2013, reports by Katarzyna Surmiak-Domańska were printed in “Gazeta Wyborcza”. All three authors demonstrated a deep conviction that the United States is a country about which no generalizing judgments can be made since each opinion expressed about the country can be countered with one, equally corresponding to reality, that denies the previous. The reporters set an ambitious task for themselves — they want, at least in some measure, to understand the American society, its culture, tradition and way of thinking. That is why they talk to people and relate their stories, that is also why they focus their attention on unusual issues and phenomena, but primarily on the fate of individuals.

- Summary/Abstract:The article contains an analysis of reportage books by Małgorzata Szejnert: Wyspa klucz [Key Island] and Borowiki przy ternpajku [Boletuses near the Turnpike]. The first book, illustrating the history of immigrant inspection station on Ellis Island in New York, is a starting point for discussion on Polish emigration to the United States at the turn of the 19th century. Anxieties of the then emigrants are juxtaposed with the portrait of contemporary Polish diaspora. The authoress discusses their current dilemmas and relationship with the past of their ancestors on the basis of the second of the above-mentioned books. What complements the problems discussed in the article are emigrational episodes in the biography of Szejnert herself as well as various American motifs present in the reporter’s other works.

- Summary/Abstract:In his article the author discusses similarities or even affinities between Ryszard Kapuściński’s journalism and writing with the American “new journalism,” as well as the “craziest” form in this literary movement — “gonzo” journalism. In the opinion of some western researchers the author of The Emperor was to some extent a “gonzo” journalist. Marek Kusiba considers this writer’s work in the broad context of Polish and western literature. He proves that Kapuściński created, regardless of the development of both of the abovementioned styles, his own variety of artistic journalism, combining the achievements of fiction and nonfiction. Thus, both in Poland and in the world, he was one of the precursors of reportage containing features and attractiveness typical of belles-lettres — without prejudice to facts. The author of the present sketch, referring to prominent practitioners and theoreticians of “new journalism,” emphasizes that Kapuściński was independent and isolated in his writing explorations, that by going beyond the framework of traditional journalism and reportage, he anticipated solutions that soon become the norm.

- Summary/Abstract:The research analysis in the article focuses on the volume titled Toronto, Tronto, Trana, co-authored by Jadwiga Jurkszus-Tomaszewska and Adam Tomaszewski, published in Canada in 1967. This book constitutes an interesting contribution to the understanding of the multicultural dimension of Canadian mentality. This book of reportage, in which the information is accompanied by insightful commentary and explanations, is analysed in the context of the genre of reportage written in Melchior Wańkowicz’s style, i.e. somewhere in between the news coverage, opinion journalism and — above all — literature. Toronto, Tronto, Trana can be called a tourist guidebook, a specific Baedeker’s Guide, containing descriptions that are not focused on the discussion of the co-authors’ emigrational fate, on the vision of their situation in the context of exile, of being an expatriate, an émigré, but rather on making use of the opportunities offered by the journey itself as well as demonstrating strong emotional ties with the new homeland – Canada, and especially with the city of permanent residence, namely Toronto.

Thanks to the initiative and organizational effort of the Polish Society of Academics, the Polish community could meet various artists of multiple talents. During the inauguration of the academic year, writers and academics delivered speeches, among them: Danuta Mostwin and Florian Śmieja. Poetic evenings were held for Beata Obertyńska or Czesław Miłosz. From among the writers residing in America, the following presented their works during the literary evenings: Rόża Nowotarska, Bohdan Pawłowicz and Zbigniew Chałko, whereas Zofia Romanowiczowa came from Europe especially to participate. Among national artists presenting their literary works one could mention: Zbigniew Bieńkowski and Małgorzata Hillar, Jan Jόzef Szczepański, Artur Międzyrzecki and Julia Hartwig (winners of the scholarship offered by the University of Iowa) as well as Maria Dłuska and Tymoteusz Karpowicz. Special attention was given to theatre artists: Elżbieta Dziewońska-Krzemieńska, Mieczysława Ćwiklińska, Elżbieta Barszczewska and Łukasz Łukaszewicz. The successof these meetings was largely due to the active participation of the members of the Legionof Young Polish Women, the sponsors of the Chair of Polish Literature at the University of Chicago.

Nowak in “Odrodzenie” from late 1946 through 1947. The content is made up of sociological observations collected during business as well as private trips, related to the post-war wandering and exile as well as the US immigration policy, comments on the place and role of the Polish community in American politics, remarks on the image of Poles in the West following the accusations of antisemitism, disputes with the journalists commenting on the course and outcome of the Parliamentary elections in 1947. The publicist’s commentaries are juxtaposed with the diagnoses formulated on diplomatic reports compiled by Miłosz for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs as part of his consular obligations, in order to highlight the mechanism of selecting issues and their interpretation.

- Author(s):Piotr Millati
- Language:Polish
- Subject(s):Social Sciences, Language and Literature Studies, Literary Texts
- Page Range:425-437
- No. of Pages:13
- Summary/Abstract:The text presents the American journalistic work of Leopold Tyrmand, published mainly in two magazines edited by him in the USA: “The Chronicles of Culture” and “The Rockford Papers.” Both were designed by Tyrmand as instruments supporting the combat against the so-called liberal culture, whose progressing expansion in the 1960s and 1970s was seen by the writer as the most serious threat to the western civilisation. A remedy for the decadence of the western world was to revive and promote the idea and values inherent in conservatism — the ideology fervently followed by Tyrmand in America. Blatant partiality and extremity of opinions expressed in the articles written by Tyrmand in that period have largely contributed to pushing this journalist work outside the mainstream of the public dispute in America.

- Author(s):Kazimierz Adamczyk

- Page Range:439-453
- No. of Pages:15
- Summary/Abstract:The author of the article poses a curious question before the literature of the second independence emigration — he asks about the world unpresented in this writing. He refers to the book by Julian Kornhauser and Adam Zagajewski, which gained fame in the early 1970s. In this text, the author enumerates specific “white spaces,” the aspects of American reality not presented in the literature of Polish emigrant writers. He offers a thesis that it was not always the propaganda fight in the ideologically divided world that was the reason why the writers failed to notice and observe particular aspects of life in the USA.

- Author(s):Magdalena Piekara

- Page Range:455-470
- No. of Pages:16
- Summary/Abstract:In Polish socialist realistic journalism and prose, the image of North America is an extremely important element, which is often used as an ideological tool. Vivid images (including those most popular: potato beetle or Coca Cola) in the world divided after World War II are supposed to convince the readers that the United States are a great and ominous power, a superpower built on the exploitation of the working class and becoming rich at the expense of other countries, as well as the willingness to start another global war — a country that strives to destroy peace and communism. These images, already interpreted many times, become an interesting starting point for the description of the specific exoticism of America, completely unknown and unapproachable in Europe, hidden behind the Iron Curtain (although this term is much younger, it perfectly describes the global power structure).South America, on the other hand, remains completely unknown to Polish literary critics andjournalists. It shall remain so, even though the novels of the Brazilian writer, Jorge Amado, have been published in Poland quite often.

- Summary/Abstract:The conversations/correspondence of Jarosław Borowiec with Krystyna Miłobędzka and Andrzej Falkiewicz, Tymoteusz Karpowicz with Miłobędzka and Falkiewicz, Karpowicz with Heinrich Kunstmann make up an intriguing testimony of “friendship of diversities”, a collection of affirmations of intellectual co-presence. In Dwie rozmowy [Two Conversations], which the present sketch refers to, the portrayals and self-portrayals of the writers are perpetuated — moments of honest, hearty concern, proof of intellectual affinity and traces of diversity. While reading this volume, one may observe the erudite “thoughtful hours” of the participants of the debates, discussing the ideas and message of literary works and designing next publications. The subject matter of the article is a composition of letters, thanks to which one can follow the aspects of “life and work” as well as the issues related to the “metaphysics of art.”
