Summary/Abstract: It is a memoir of Aleksander Uszyński, a rank-and-file soldier of the Polish underground army, a participant of the Warsaw Uprising, a German prisoner of war and a political emigrant in the post-war years. It frankly portrays his happy childhood in independent Poland, the tragedy of the outbreak of war, the motivation to join the underground, episodes of serving in the underground army and in the Warsaw Uprising. The memoir also describes his experiences in France when he had to make up for his educational limitations from the war time and adapt to a society that was new to him.
