Summary/Abstract: The “Silver Tsunami” is here! According to various relevant sources such as the UN Population Division, the WHO, and the ILO, population across the world is getting older. By 2050, there will be more than 20% of the world’s population aged 65 years and over. Statistics for the European Union reveal the same - the age structure of the European population is expected to change significantly over the next decades and by 2060, the share of people aged 65 and above will increase from 18% to 30% compared to now, while the share of people aged above 80 will more than double. Thus, in addition to notions such as “Silver Tsunami”, “Age Wave”, and the like, it is not surprising that the European Union has launched a notion “Silver Economy” related to economic activities of the population aged 50 and over and their impact on various sectors of the national economy. This negative demographic transition, i.e. population aging, has shown four very distinctive features: unprecedented, pervasiveness, endurance and profound implications on human life in general. On a more personal level, what we are witnessing today as a trend, we will experience first-hand in the decades to come. Yet, times are changing. An aging population is becoming a reality that is surrounded by various myths when it comes to older people as workers or as consumers. The fact is that people today live longer and healthier lives, which requires a shift in perception of age when it comes to supply and demand sides of economics. It also holds true from the perspective of other disciplines. This, in turn, opens a new frontier in academic, practical and policy thinking about rethinking aging and redesigning retirement. This multidisciplinary edited book “The Aging Society: Rethinking and Redesigning Retirement” is one attempt not to be swept away by the “Silver Tsunami” tide. The content of the chapters reveals the multifaceted and highly complex issue of aging which brought together researchers from various fields. Aging has been initially dominant in medical research since it is primarily a physiological process, yet it has proven to be a social transformation with numerous repercussions calling for researchers from economics, communication, law and others to join the scientific discussion. The authors in this edition have tried to shed light on the potential of aging research by drawing attention to various topics such as aging as a normal process, concept and measurement of the quality of life of the elderly, financial challenges and retirement literacy of the older population, specific bioethical issues, silver architecture for seniors, protection of the rights and safety of older people in transport, social entrepreneurship and franchising, collaborative economy, an age-specific ICT use gap, media literacy and communication. The book has gathered authors from Josip Juraj Strossmayer University of Osijek – Faculty of Economics in Osijek, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Medicine Osijek / Clinical Hospital Center Osijek and Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture Osijek, as well as Faculty of Economics and Business Zagreb (University of Zagreb), Virovitica College, Croatian Education and Teacher Training Agency, University of Information Science and Technology, “St. Paul the Apostle” (Macedonia), Beykoz University, Vocational School at Department of Social Sciences (Turkey), Nisantasi University, Vocational School at Department of Logistics (Turkey), and Warsaw School of Economics (Poland). Such institutional diversity is a signal that the issue of aging is a universally attractive research topic that easily transcends disciplinary and national boundaries. As editors of this book, we feel obliged to applaud our authors for making a research effort and scientific contribution in the advent of the global COVID-19 pandemic crisis. Our gratitude is extended to our reviewers who have been affirmative towards the content and style of this work. The publication of this book will be a permanent reminder of strength, diligence, creativity and resilience of academic scholars as individuals and universities as institutions in times challenging us on both a personal and a professional level.

- Summary/Abstract:Aging is a physiological process that, affected by genetic factors, different lifestyles, and environmental exposures, leads to senescence and death. With increasing age, changes in organs and organ systems occur, leading to progressive deterioration and damage to their function, as well as chronic diseases and functional disability. Older age is defined as a chronological age of 65 years. The average life expectancy in Western Europe and the United States is 74 for men and 80 for women. It is expected that by 2025, there will be as many as 82% of people over 60. The elderly often suffer from presbyopia and hearing loss, their muscle mass decreases with an increase in fatty tissue and diminishing bone mineral density, their skeleton becomes more fragile and their body height decreases. Movement and mental reactions become slower. Cardiac minute volume, the vital capacity of the lungs and kidney filtration capacity decrease, while the function of the digestive system generally remains preserved. Special characteristics of organ systems of the elderly are an indispensable subject when it comes to the development of medicine and the development of civilization in general.

- Summary/Abstract:According to world statistics coming from various international sources, we are witnessing a demographic shift that has resulted in the graying of the population at an unprecedented rate. In Europe alone, the percentage of people 65 and over is expected to reach over 30% of the population by the year 2050. When we additionally consider that life expectancy is increasing and that people’s perception of older age /retirement age is changing due to better living standards, then it is obvious that policymakers across the world need to invest serious effort to ensure the quality of life for the older population. The concept of quality of life is known as a notion in various social and human sciences. However, since the notion of quality itself is subjected to numerous definitions and often coupled with personal feelings and expectations, there are indications that concepts and concerns related to the quality of life in older ages may be different from the rest of the population. The purpose of this paper is to introduce the notion of quality of life and relate it to the aging population. By using the method of a narrative review of selected literature, the paper will try to capture multiple dimensions of the quality of life. As older people mostly assess their quality of life through health, social engagement, dependency, material circumstances, social comparison and the like, it is clear that the concept of quality of life is elusive and complicates an exact definition and measurement.

- Summary/Abstract:The collaborative or sharing economy has been developing rapidly in recent years along with the digital transformation on the global scale as well as in the EU. Many Internet-based collaborative platforms enable citizens and entrepreneurs to participate in the (digital) market and to offer services on a part-time or professional basis while stimulating the variety of choice and price competitiveness. The paper examines recent trends in the use of collaborative economy platforms in the European Union focusing on the senior citizens (65 years and older) as a very specific demographic segment especially regarding the usage of ICT enabled initiatives. This paper uses an adjusted Eurobarometer research methodology which was carried out in 2018 in 28 EU Member States with a total sample of 26,544 respondents from different social and demographic groups, and the primary data access was enabled through the Gesis database. A total of 8,561 senior respondents was filtered from the initial data-set to create the primary sample for the research. Specific types of collaborative economy platforms are explored, as well as the main advantages and disadvantages of the platforms used.

- Summary/Abstract:This study covers the services offered to the elderly, individuals who work in this field, statistical data on aging in Turkey, and similar issues. The data in this study was collected from the literature review and from written sources. In the literature, the concept of age is divided into two: biological and chronological. Although chronological age is the same in all humans, biological age varies according to individuals. Chronological age is the number of years a person has been alive. Biological age is the representation of the biological step as a unit of time. Aging is the state where individuals gradually lose their physical and psychological power. The increasingly elderly population has also caused the academic environment to focus on the field of older people. Moreover, the increasing elderly population has accelerated the process of developing national policies and plans in countries and the process of producing services in line with the developed plans and policies. According to the aging data of the United Nations, there is an increase in the number and proportion of elderly individuals in the world. As a result, in this case, Turkey does not differ, so the elderly population is increasing with each passing day.

- Summary/Abstract:Silver economy is a broad concept incorporating many different fields of investigation. All of them arise from the needs of the aging world population and the concurrent need to comply with economic sustainability, but otherwise have very specific characteristics and implications. Recent academic findings suggest that in the context of architecture, not enough attention is paid to the user perspective, concerning the increasingly older population. At the same time, architectural quality and long-term performance of housing objects are becoming more and more dependent on the needs of the elderly, who rightfully expect to grow old in a caring environment, including adjusted living premises. By applying scientific analysis, synthesis, and comparison of data from relevant secondary sources, this paper aims to investigate key trends regarding architecture as part of the silver economy. In addition to that, the intention has been to generate recommendations that would enable having a quality, active living even within the aging society. Findings suggest that the silver economy in architecture is conceptually elaborated but still rather a marginal scheme in real life. However, a multidisciplinary approach in terms of integrating architectural and space efforts with smart technology conveniences emerges as the direction of future research as well as practice. Limitations of this study are primarily financial concerns and prerequisites that have not been appreciated enough while evaluating the need for silver architecture investments.

- Summary/Abstract:Based on statistics, it is an indisputable fact that the world population is constantly aging, both in terms of the number and proportion of old people in the total population. Thus, population aging is becoming a significant social transformation that has implications for almost all sectors of society. Older people can be seen as contributors to the development involved in policies and programs at all levels. The inverted population pyramid is becoming increasingly apparent, creating difficulties in maintaining the health and pension systems, especially in countries where the share of the elderly has almost doubled. Recently, the perception of older people has changed. Regardless of the reduced abilities, it should not be forgotten that aging brings some values that integrate them into the social environment. One should not forget the acquired professional knowledge and experience, voluntary work and the like, which can contribute to economic growth. The discussions conducted by economists on the problem of age are predominantly neoclassical. The view from another angle comes from sociology authors, sociological politicians who themselves produced their own “older age policies”. In contrast to neoclassical individualism, the sociological picture of aging outlines the social construction of older age and the structural dependence of the elderly. At the heart of this paper is a view from modern macroeconomics that puts into the forefront a household that uses its intertemporal function to plan its consumption. Theoretical explanations are contained in four main modeling frameworks that have become central tools in economic and age studies: the Ramsay model, the generations model, the perpetual youth model, and the overlapping generations model.

- Summary/Abstract:For today’s workers, the process of aging will differ from previous generations. Social contracts among governments, employers, and individuals are central to retirement systems around the world. Today, throughout their lifetime, individuals are more responsible for their finances than ever before. Financial markets are rapidly changing with developments in technology and new and more complex financial products. Skills are becoming more critical and it is important to understand whether people are equipped to effectively navigate the maze of financial decisions that they face every day. Generous defined social security benefit pension plans are diminishing, as life expectancy and the need for self-funded retirement savings are increasing. In this paper, the author presents the results of the research conducted in the region of Slavonia related to retirement literacy and understanding of the financial behavior of the population of teachers that work in schools. The questionnaire was based on the Big Three financial and retirement literacy measurement and The Aegon Retirement Readiness Survey. The goal of the research is to compare the results to similar research studies and to find out financial understanding and the need for organizing retirement literacy education for teachers’ population in the region of Slavonia.

- Summary/Abstract:The majority of European countries are witnessing a population aging process for several decades. This trend is rapidly transforming the age structure of society, resulting in a declining share of working-age persons in the total population. During the next three decades, the number of older people is projected to follow an upward trend. Population aging has resulted primarily from a long-term fall in fertility rates and increased life expectancy. The growing number of older people (65+) within society leads to a range of economic challenges, such as pressure on economic growth, reduced labor supply, higher social and healthcare costs, etc. Such negative processes call into question the sustainability of public finances. Namely, assuming that the old-age dependency ratio will continue to rise, a shrinking labor force may no longer be able to provide enough earnings for pensions and healthcare systems. One of the major areas of concern for policymakers is the cost of providing adequate health and long-term care, as very old people consume proportionally more social services than other age groups. Demographic trends of population aging in Croatia are rather similar to other EU Member States. As the issue of population aging is very important, it is often present in scientific literature and theory and therefore it should be at least equally important to economic policymakers. The main analysis in the chapter includes the relation between population aging and potential pressure on the size of the workforce and the financial challenges of our social systems. Because the share of older people (65+) differs between the EU Member States, the regional analysis in the context of the median age of the population in each of the EU-28 Member States is provided. Furthermore, the overall scores of the Active Aging Index (AAI) for EU-28 are presented, showing a regional aspect of population aging. The chapter also explains potential financial products and services which can support solving the aforementioned social and economic problems based on the analysis of contemporary financial systems, techniques, and mechanism, etc., which should be implemented in the countries under study.

The author compares different kinds of investments possible to be made to finance the retirement period. The analysis of risk and return is conducted for typical retirement investments like bonds, stocks, or real estate. The paper aims at answering the question if it is possible to choose the best asset at any time as the retirement time investment. The study is done on the basis of the Polish investor and also contains the analysis of different types of risks concerned with analyzed kinds of assets.

- Summary/Abstract:The rise of life expectancy and the trend of increasing age for retirement are influencing the world economy. The age for retirement is slowly growing from 65 to 67 years and could easily reach 70 years in years to come. Although for some this is still far away, for many it causes a strong and current sense of unease. Fluctuations and competition on the job market worldwide are not adding ease for people since there is a danger that you must find a new job at the age of 50+. So, from one standpoint, when people retire or they are made redundant, franchising can be a sound solution for continuing their work. Franchising can allow them to create a new career and have bigger control over the future. As an older franchisee, one can find many benefits for adopting franchising from starting a business to having an asset that you can later sell for financing retirement. From a franchisor’s standpoint, an older franchisee means reliability and experience which are characteristics of a successful franchisee. Thus, for the aging society a franchise business model can provide a chance not only for survival but also to have a successful business. On the other hand, franchising as a business model is providing many different services and products which are intended for the aging society. Today the products, services, and care for the aging society offer business opportunities that can be put within the franchise business model. The main aim of this chapter is to analyze opportunities that franchising can offer to the aging society from both standpoints: (i) as a franchisee, and (ii) as a business that offers products, services and care to the aging people. The chapter will also suggest further proposals for research on the role of franchising in the silver economy.

- Summary/Abstract:One of the major issues in today’s world is the fast-growing proportion of the population aged 60 and over. As a result of this current demographic state, a new economic system has emerged which focuses, among other things, on extending the independent and active lives of older people. This population group represents an increasing number of healthy individuals with financial resources, knowledge, experience, and sufficient time for economic and social activities. Besides, many of them strive to improve the quality of life in their communities, hence giving back a portion of what the community has invested in them. Social entrepreneurship might be a good way to tackle many issues older people face. Starting their social venture might be a good way to utilize the full potential of all resources older people have. By becoming social entrepreneurs, they could a) reduce the prejudice about the state of mind of older people, especially retired people, and b) continue to be active participants in generating sustainable economic and social development at the local and national levels. This paper introduces social entrepreneurship as a powerful means against social isolation and a way of improving their well-being (raising their self-esteem, the sense of belonging and the sense of self-efficacy). The paper will give an overview of examples of projects, organizations and social enterprises/ entrepreneurs that promote social entrepreneurship as a significant tool for enhancing the silver economy and create meaningful solutions to many challenges arising from old age.

- Summary/Abstract:Older persons naturally become less mobile (due to their age, health, lower income, etc.). However, does age necessarily have to mean the termination of traveling and use of transport? Whether drivers, pedestrians, or passengers, each of these forms carries specific issues and problems for the elderly. Although they have more free time, it often happens that because of reduced mobility and inaccessibility of public transport older persons stay at home. This not only limits the quality of their life in the tourist, leisure, cultural and social sense, but can also have an impact on the quality of getting e.g. health care. For these reasons, mobility is important to them and therefore transport must be easily accessible and adjusted for use. To use public transport in the best possible way, all passengers, and especially the elderly, must be familiar with the rights specifically provided for them and the procedures for exercising them. Progress has been made within the European Union to protect the rights of older passengers. Specifically, the European Union has adopted regulations to guarantee additional rights for persons with disabilities and persons with reduced mobility (including the elderly). A particular problem regarding older persons in transport is related to traffic safety issues. Statistics show ‘interesting’ data when it comes to the elderly, whether they were involved in traffic accidents as drivers or pedestrians. The most important problems related to mobility and public transport are presented in the paper. The paper also analyzes the most important provisions of European regulations on the rights of passengers with reduced mobility. Data on road accidents involving the older persons are also analyzed and an attempt is made to answer whether they are a threat to road safety. Finally, certain measures will be proposed to reduce the inaccessibility and unavailability of public transport. It is also suggested to conduct additional research on the number of older persons traveling and the problems encountered in transport.

- Summary/Abstract:The issue of organ donation and transplantation is, in the first place, an issue of medical excellence of transplantation teams, but also a controversial issue with doubtful bioethical, legal, cultural, religious, and other questions. Since medical research are improving constantly, research in the field of organ transplantation is setting new interesting (bio) ethical and legal questions. According to the last population census, there are approximately one million inhabitants in the Republic of Croatia who are older than 60 years and who are also more likely to be on the organ transplantation candidate’s list than the younger inhabitants, because of the various health problems of the aging process. Also, according to research, the median age of 150 patients on chronic dialysis at the Clinical Hospital Centre Osijek is 65.5 years. Since bioethics is a scientific discipline that studies all issues related to life itself, organ transplantation and aging are some of the crucial fields of the human aspect of bioethics. By connecting these two issues, this chapter aims to expound the main (bio)ethical and legal problems of organ donation and transplantation and put them into the context of the issue of aging in the Republic of Croatia. The main questions that may arise are what the main problems of older people are when it comes to organ donation and transplantation, whether they are aware of them and if there is any kind of age discrimination in the process of organ allocation. The author will try to point out these and other bioethical questions when it comes to aging and organ donation and transplantation, and also set a new scheme of awareness in relation to this issue.

- Summary/Abstract:Since the world’s population is aging, there have been numerous articles, books, and research conducted on that topic connected with the quality of life, expectations, and realistic possibilities. An additional point in favor of considering the elderly population as an unresearched economy or market is that for the first time since 2018 we have more people over 64 than children younger than 5 years of age. Elderly people today are of course different than previous generations of pensioners. This is especially important when it comes to technology usage. On the other hand, information and communication technology has never been more affordable and accessible. Software solutions have become our everyday passion and mobile devices are the last thing we check before falling asleep. Also, the information, in general, is more important and easier to get and resourceful for different kinds of analysis. The main aim of the chapter is to research ICT options and solutions for the population gathered under the umbrella term Silver Economy (the elderly in our societies). Services and applications which can make their life easier and better will be considered together with preparation of pensioners to use ICT. Mainly analyzing statistical data, the chapter will use a short questionnaire and interviews to check the situation in the local environment. Finally, a comparison will be made among the elderly population in terms of ICT usage in Japan, the USA, the EU, and Croatia.

- Summary/Abstract:The prevalence of the aging society phenomenon in the last decade forces governments, countries, and people to re-evaluate the perspectives and potential of lifelong learning and the effects it has on the society as a whole. According to World Bank data, the percentage in the total world population in the 0-14 year-old segment is declining, while the United Nations predict that by the year 2050 there will be more people over the age of 60 (2.1 billion) than the adolescents and young people aged 10-24 years (2 billion). The segment of elderly people has longer life expectancy and better overall health condition due to advances in medicine and technology. These trends implicate urgency for better inclusion and defining new roles for this segment. The most effective way to do this is to enable the elderly to have access to information and to know how to properly use it. The major role in this shift is certainly played by information and communication technology. The aim of this paper is to examine the state and possibilities of including the elderly as a more active society member through the use of digital technology and lifelong learning.

- Summary/Abstract:Communication is an integral part of our everyday lives, be it intrapersonal or interpersonal communication. The focus of this paper is on the communication of older people and the ways (recommendations) which would make this communication more successful, as well as the challenges it brings. Today’s society is getting older, especially in underdeveloped countries, and it is therefore necessary to create age-friendly environments to enable satisfaction and possibilities to enjoy ages 65+. Notwithstanding the development level, there is still judging and prejudice about older people based on age alone, and not on the actual abilities and efficiency which a person possesses. Hence, the state, as the bearer of different legal frameworks, is to devise certain strategies for the elderly population to ensure guidelines for help, and, ultimately, for support. For the purpose of this paper, research based on a questionnaire for the third age population (65+) was conducted, divided into three subgroups: the young-old (65-74), the middle old (75-84) and the very old (85+) with questions defining the style of communication and communication skills in general. The research aimed to gather information on how older people perceive intrapersonal communication on the one hand, and interpersonal communication with their environment on the other, to improve their communication skills.

- Summary/Abstract:Media literacy has been recognized in European Union documents related to audiovisual and media policy as an essential factor in the modern information society, with commitment to education on this issue at all levels. However, most education programs are focused on preschool and school-age, while at the same time, some recent research shows that people over 65 are the ones who, for various reasons (primarily, ignorance), spread most misinformation or fake news via social networks. This research seeks to gain insight into the extent to which third-person consumers are media consumers, what the forms of media are they are most in touch with, and to what extent they can distinguish informative media content from covert marketing advertising. It also seeks to gain insight into the aftermath of a generation of passive media consumers with modern media technology that offers a proactive approach to participation and information formation for the masses and to answer the question as to how much they create and shape information through social networks and communication platforms. The research is conducted on a representative sample of third-age media content consumers through questionnaires and in-depth interviews, and the analysis of the results obtained aims at determining their media knowledge, experiences, habits, and insights.
