- Summary/Abstract:The precursor of phenomenological sociology – Alfred Schütz – undertook to analyze the problems of social action, as did the great classics of sociology. The theoretical categories that he proposed for this purpose can be seen in his book Der sinnhafte Aufbau der sozialen Welt (1932) and in the article Choosing among Projects of Action (1951, Polish edition 2008). Schütz emphasizes that it is necessary, first of all, to take into account the types of motives of human actions, secondly, to analyze the important categories of attitudes and relations towards other people related to the worlds of the contemporary people, predecessors and successors, and thirdly, the typifications of the knowledge system of the acting person. The last, fourth analytical category which he distinguishes in the research of action, includes “good” and “evil”, that is, according to Schütz’s terminology, positive and negative weight. The followers of the phenomenological approach in sociology, Peter L. Berger and T. Luckmann, developed some of Schütz’s proposals and presented a framework for the social creation of reality in the processes of externalisation, objectification and internalisation. The categories offered by these scholars will be helpful in the empirical analysis of the choice of projects of actions of the graduates of the Doctoral Studies of the Faculty of Social Sciences, whose worlds have been scientifically explored in a project carried out within the framework of the scientific circle of qualitative sociology.

- Summary/Abstract:The authors refer to the repertoire of the notions of phenomenological sociology by Alfred Schütz (e.g. the world of everyday life, because-motive, in-order-to- -motive) in order to raise the issue of the relationship between the activities projected by the interviewees and the biographies of their ancestors. The subject of the analysis is the moment of the decision to start third degree studies, the importance of other people in forging it, and the motives behind it. It turns out that relatively often the idea of writing a doctorate thesis within the framework of third degree education appeared in the interlocutors’ minds as their student’s career progressed – moving on to subsequent years, becoming involved in university activities. At some point, most of the respondents began to perceive the perspective of a doctorate as a natural extension of their current activity. A great significance in the emergence of this idea can be attributed to the figure of a supervisor – a kind of master and a fundamental inspirer of the doctoral educational pathway. At the same time, it should be noted that the character of the family circle of interviewees was not indifferent to them either. Although only some interviewees have a multi-generational tradition of higher education, in most homes cultural models (books, active way of spending time) seem to correspond with the chosen educational path. When asked about the motives for undertaking 3rd degree studies, the students most often claimed that they had done so in order to achieve employment in the scientific sphere; they rarely stated that it was a need for self-definition.

- Keywords:generalized others; role figures; three types of doctoral students
- Summary/Abstract:What was the image of the doctoral studies of their later graduates, before they took them up? Did it turn out to be in line with reality? What or who inspired the students to make this decision and what did they expect from it? Is there a set of common aspirations and basic characteristics of this group? – These are the questions I seek to answer by identifying two elements that significantly influence the design and implementation of the social action in question: the context of predicted events, aspirations and values, and the category of generalized and meaningful others. Therefore, I look at the original plans and initial assumptions concerning doctoral studies, which were constructed by the researched graduates before they began their studies. This allows for the identification of three leading goals of the study, which can be called, ranking them according to the popularity of indications as ideological, cognitive-scientific and ennobling. They can be assigned to three types of doctoral students, whom we have described as idealists, pragmatists and those seeking recognition. The decision to take up third degree studies is also influenced by the social environment of the respondents, in which generalised and significant categories of others can be placed. Graduates cite here examples of their role figures, among which there are, in particular, people of science, personally known to the respondents, but not belonging to their family circles. The key, however, turns out to be the master-student relationship, in which the supervisor occupies an extraordinary place. The assumption of this part is also an attempt to characterize the expectations towards doctoral studies. As a result of the conducted interviews, two leading types of expectations are revealed, which result from two different attitudes presented by the respondents. These include: searching attitude (“selfsufficient”) and conservative (“student”) attitude. However, regardless of the represented type of approach to studying, the interviewed graduates perceive doctoral studies as a process in which one of the most important goals is personal development.

- Keywords:project of action; we-relation; they-orientation
- Summary/Abstract:In the chapter devoted to the feasibility of the project and its implementation, the examined graduates reflect on the course of doctoral studies and evaluate their progress. This raises issues related to expectations, hopes connected with undertaking a project of action, as well as reports of certain disappointments and successes. Not without significance is also the issue of skills acquired during third degree studies and reflection on their usefulness in the professional work of the graduates. The presented chapter also attempts to define a certain direction and form that should be taken by doctoral studies in order to best meet the preferences of future students. No less important is also the attempt at a comprehensive evaluation of the project, contacts between doctoral students themselves, as well as the answer to the question whether – in the opinion of the respondents – such a project would be worth repeating.

- Summary/Abstract:The structure projects of actions of the PhD graduates at the Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities, first of all, determine the content of their worlds and the sphere of influence: the “university” is the surrounding world (Umwelt), creating an important level of relevance in the decision making process. It is a sphere of influence that is directly within the scope of their experience, although the reflexive relation, i.e. the influence of students/further doctoral students on the university system, is very limited, according to young people. Secondly, the models of actions consist of motives related to the choice of studies and then to the future activities of graduates of doctoral studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences. They focus on the in-order-to-motive – in order to “fulfil oneself”– and the because-motive: because “It was easy for me to learn” and “I had scientists in my family”. The supervisors of PhD students became significant others in the course of studies. The world of dreams of the graduates is a teaching and scientific work at the university. The graduates do not regret the decision to undertake doctoral studies even in the cases when they give up writing their PhD theses. Thirdly, attention should be paid to the assessment criteria, i.e. the positive and negative weight of the acting individuals. Among the respondents, family life and marriage are treated as positive values. They would like to participate in research projects of supervisors and promoters. They believe that the current model of doctoral studies is based on “school-like” assimilation.
