- Summary/Abstract:Borderland areas continue to be the object of reflections and studies. Oneexample of the changing scope of research on borderland areas is the study ofthe Lviv School of Architecture. The article presents the development of theconcept of the Lviv School of Architecture and the change in the scope of research:its extension to cover more and more areas and phenomena. The Lviv School of Architecture includes architects working and educatedin Lviv who graduated from the Technical School functioning there since 1844(in the years 1918–1939 known as the Lviv Polytechnic) or the graduates of theArts and Industry School in Lviv (of lesser importance). The term ‘Lviv Schoolof Architecture’ referred to artists working in Lviv and in nearly all Central Europe. The influence of this school of architecture actually covered any area wherearchitects educated and developed in Lviv were working. The representativesof the Lviv circle worked in many borderland areas, but the influences of theLviv School of Architecture were the strongest in the northern and southernlands (Pomerania, Gdynia, Vilnius region) and dominated in the eastern andwestern lands (Silesia, former Galicia).Recently, the scope of study of the Lviv School of Architecture has beensignificantly extended. Analyses did not only focus on the architecture of the19th century and the early 20th century, but also on works created later, in theinter-war period and after WWII. The most important works concerning thesubject are presented in this article.

- Summary/Abstract:The problem of Lutsk architecture in the inter-war period has never beenstudied by Polish scholars. Lutsk, which is one of the oldest towns of the borderland, was the most developed in the modern period, but suffered deepstagnation after the partitions. After the regaining of independence, the townbecame the capital of Volhynian Voivodeship, which gave it new developmentalopportunities. The new rank was connected e.g. with the need to constructnew buildings for many institutions. Many public buildings appeared in theinter-war period, mostly designed by well-known Warsaw architects (such asKazimierz Tołłoczko, Marian Lalewicz, or Julian Puterman-Sadłowski). Newoffice buildings were mainly located north of the historical town center. Thisway, a modern center with banks, offices and services was designed in theformer suburbs. Of special importance are objects such as neoclassical Bankof Poland designed by Stanisław Filasiewicz, edifices of the State AgriculturalBank and District Office, functionalist Post Office and Telegraph building, orthe building of the Central Fund of Agricultural Companies, representing themonumentalist trend typical of the 1930s. Residential buildings were also developingin Lutsk. All those buildings illustrate the process of transformationof architectural forms in the inter-war period from tradition to avant-garde.

- Summary/Abstract:Erik Dahlbergh (1625–1703) was a Swedish soldier and artist. His drawingswere used e.g., as the basis for illustrations in S. Pufendorf ’s De rebus a CaroloGustavo Sveciae Rege Gestis Commentariorum Libri Septem. Many of themrepresent Polish towns and are an indispensable iconographic source from themid 17th century. In the panorama of Warsaw published in this work we can seethe “Moscow Chapel” – the mausoleum of Vasili IV, tsar of Russia, constructedin 1620. The appearance of the building is the object of controversy.Dahlbergh’s drawings are not always completely accurate, and no Polishsketches of the building have remained. Therefore, the author offers to learnbetter the artist’s way of work by studying some better preserved works and tocomparing the drawings with contemporary photos. Dahlbergh sketched onthe spot, and a few years later created preliminary drawings. Then, an engravertransferred them to a brass plate. Each stage meant some deviations from theprevious view. Dahlbergh omitted some details and composed his pictures bygeometric transformation of the buildings’ images, and the engraver added hisown decorative details.Applying this method to the view of Warsaw, the author concludes thatthe real appearance of the Moscow Chapel differed from its present images. The building was designed to be a one-story rotunda topped with a dome, nota three-story tower on an octagonal plan. However, in order to confirm thisthesis, we also need to study thoroughly the later iconographic material andwritten sources.

- Summary/Abstract:Ukrainian (Ruthenian) duke families played an important role in the multiculturalhistory of the Duchy of Lithuania and the First Commonwealth. Thefamily of Ostrogski dukes (14th c. – 1st half of the 17th c.) was one of the mostprominent. The high social status of the dynasty motivated them to actively developthe existing and establish new towns in their lands (Ostroh, Dubno, Zaslav,Stepan, Mezhirichi, Turov, Оstropol, Rivne, Kostiantyniv and others). Manytown strongholds and dukes’ castles were constructed, which as a whole ensuredconsiderable defense potential in the Eastern borderland of contemporaryPoland and Lithuania. The family also contributed greatly to the constructionof sacral (Orthodox and Catholic) buildings. The paper is an attempt to generallycharacterize previous studies of the vast heritage of Ostrogski family andpotential issues of future studies concerning urban planning and architecture.
