Summary/Abstract: This book aims to establish a connection between the American postmodern author John Barth and autobiographic fiction, via the literary technique borrowed from heraldry, la mise-en-abyme. More precisely, the author has looked for answers to the questions the American writer himself was asking as early as the 1980s, both in his essays, and in his fiction, questions revolving around the issue of the necessity of writing novels persistently featuring himself as a character.
