Summary/Abstract: Social ties are seldom described as a sociological category, per se. Social ties arefrequently used in analysis of social capital and constitute one of its main elements.Globalization, which is characterized by rapid pace of social changes, is accompanied bya decline of social ties. The aim of this paper is to characterize and evaluate the strengthof social ties in contemporary rural communities. Both the available statistical data andthe author’s own research conducted in 2012 were used in this paper. The first researchfocused on social ties in case of flood risk in three communes of following voivodeships:małopolskie, opolskie and lubelskie. The second research project was concernedwith family ties and was done in six communes of małopolskie and świętokrzyskievoivodeships.
