Summary/Abstract: This report examines different approaches in defining the quality of higher education in relation to the established roles, goals and functions of the educational system in the new conditions. The main differences between fundamental and applied disciplines are revealed and, on this basis, the role of fundamental disciplines in achieving the quality of higher education in accordance with its main goal is brought out.
