Summary/Abstract: The report examines the historical analogy based on an article on Afghanistan written by Friedrich Engels in 1857 and published in the New American Cyclopedia, Vol. I, 1858. Important elements of the analysis of Afghan society and the state in the 19th century are emphasized. The comparison with the current situation shows the preservation of a number of basic features in the ethnic and social structure and the structure of power, which largely explains the failure of attempts to exercise external control over the territory of the country.
