Summary/Abstract: This article aims to show that the division of speech into semantically independent lexical and grammatical units is, according to Ferdinand de Saussure’s claim, one of the basic and, at the same time, the most difficult tasks of linguistics. In support of this thesis, the author gives the example of the Polish expression 'tam', which, despite its apparent simplicity, poses many serious problems in linguistic analysis. The literature on this expression is unsatisfactory from the author’s point of view. Therefore, after discussing the most important works on this subject, she presents her own description of the main Polish units containing the 'tam' segment.
