Summary/Abstract: Peptic ulcers are sores that develop in the lining of the stomach, lower esophagus, or small intestine that usually formed as a result of inflammation caused by the bacteria helicobacter pylori. Vitamin B12 deficiency can be a common and often overlooked problem, the lack of B12 leads to neurological disorders and dementia. The symptoms of vitamin B12 deficiency are, however, very subtle and unspecific and can easily remain unnoticed. Medications used to treat stomach ulcers may cause harmful vitamin B12 deficiency, patients who took tablets known as proton pump inhibitors or histamine antagonists were more likely to lack enough vitamin B12, the reduction of stomach acid’s production by the anti-ulcer drugs is behind the effect. Researchers recommend that everyone who is taking stomach ulcer drugs on a regular basis for two years or more to check the level of vitamin B12 in their blood.
