Summary/Abstract: The paper traces changes in the understanding of the concept of subject and corresponding changes in the understanding of the concept of intelligence. Efforts to empower people who are particularly vulnerable to discrimination, i.e. mentally disabled persons, are presented as examples of the ongoing emancipatory discourse.
