Summary/Abstract: In this discussion about the sources of misunderstanding in healthcare we focus on a situation when interlocutors speak the same language and apparently have the same aims and motivations, yet they differ in their access to the resources of context as used for interpreting the message. We juxtapose medical professionals and other communication participants (e.g. patients). Both have some knowledge and experience related to giving and receiving medical care, however they often unintentionally miscommunicate due to different interpretation of the same words and messages. It is our aim to explicate the mechanism of the dependence between the speaker context and message interpretation, based on selected phrases related to healthcare. We focus on semantic prosody.
