Summary/Abstract: At the beginning of the 20th century, politics underwent a number of metamorphoses. Politics has become ever more superficial and arrogant. The contemporary marketing and PR and the digital technologies to exert pressure on public opinion have largely replaced reality with some kind of an image (the so–called simulacrum). The digital information devices – the social networks, websites and electronic publications have brought about the expansion of publicity. Yet there are negative effects in this environment as well, such as the emergence of the „new deceitful publicity“ and the „new ideological monopoly“. Other metamorphoses have also been subject to examination (in this paper). The oligarchic, plutocratic and demagoguery–related trends have gained a firm foothold (a tremendous concentration of wealth and power has gained ground). We have witnessed an overly simplistic reasoning about politics as well as other forms of the vulgarization of politics. A global trend has been the increasing mistrust in politics, which has in turn imposed the need to reconstruct public power (governance), overcome the crisis of political representation, and call on politicians to enhance the objective scientific knowledge and expertise.
