Summary/Abstract: The Democratic Index has seen the instability of global democracy in recent years. The average global score in the 2020 Democracy Index dropped from 5.44 to 5.37 in 2019. This has been the world‘s worst result since the index was created in 2006. The 2020 Democracy Index was heavily influenced by government restrictions on individual and civil liberties as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. The results of all countries in this respect fell by 0.10 and 0.09, respectively, between 2019 and 2020, with Western Europe and Eastern Europe declining in their average regional results by 0.06. This text analyzes the Democracy Index in Turkey in more detail, the trends in the dynamics of several of the most important and influential indicators of the index, reflecting the state of democracy: the free market, the media and Turkish civil society.
