Summary/Abstract: Published after the author’s death, Bouvard and Pécuchet remains the last masterpiece of Gustave Flaubert. Contrary to the majority of exegeses, I will try to see in this text the slowness behind the feverish activities, the laziness beyond the sterile encyclopaedic enthusiasms, the laissez-faire and the abandonment of any constructive approach. A common existence, conducted “au ralenti”, in favor of contemplation and essential questions about human condition and the universe.
