Summary/Abstract: One does not read the Iliad in ten years, nor Joyce's Ulysses in one day. From Monte Cristo to the New Novel, the narrator modulates the temporal axis of the diegesis according to his taste, his epistemological competence, the horizon of expectation of the public. This is also the case of the Comédie humaine, whose narrative "gearbox" we propose to dismantle in order to extract the polymorphic face of a narration that cannot be reduced to simple omniscience.
