Summary/Abstract: This paper aims to analyse transformative works of derivative nature – fan fiction – which are based on fairy tales. They are examined in the context of popular culture studies, with a focus on critical theory and Siegfried Kracauer’s concept of Märchenvernunft – the juxtaposition of reason and fairy tales. An outline of the historical roots of fan fiction in the 18th century lays the foundation for the theoretical findings and the analyses of some contemporary fan-fiction tales.
