Summary/Abstract: The article presents the key themes of John Paul II social teaching regard- ing the phenomenon of work, contained in the encyclicals Laborem exercens, Sollicitudo rei socialis and Centesimus annus. Through these documents, the Pope responded to important problems and challenges of the modern world resulting from the chang- ing socio-economic realities: the transition from a centrally controlled economy to a free market economy, the process of globalisation and exploitation as well as a new worldwide inequalities and tensions it entails, the growing primacy of capital over work, a dehumanizing approach to work with the lack of reference to the key value that is a human dignity etc. The Catholic Church’s social teaching incessantly reminds that the human being should always be treated as a subject, not an object of the work, and the duty of the state’s policy is to respect and protect, through the legal regulations, the inherent human dignity in the social system of the labour. While the Church never opted for a specific economic model, it always pointed at the superior values that should be respected in order to preserve and maintain the dignity of a working people.
