Summary/Abstract: The author dissects one of Adam Mickiewicz’s first mystical poems, entitled Hymn for the Day of the Annunciation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, written in Decem- ber 1820. The article ultimately presents the thesis that this poem introduces themes of prophethood, pride and the genius of the prophet-artist that are fundamental to the later, mature phase of the poet’s oeuvre; it also makes an initial attempt to develop the poetics of a mystical vision, to search for language suitable for it, to use the trick of the ‘mystical paradox’. He also analyses the Judaic-Jewish and, less obviously, neo-Gnostic references that are important in this poem (he is particularly concerned with Jakob Boehme’s ideas), and enters into a critical dialogue with the research tradition (especially with the studies by Stefania Skwarczyńska and Zdzisław Kępiński). In the first part of the argument, he de- votes a great deal of attention to the poetics of the work, and its hymnic connections, but also recognises that the form of the visionary work was subordinated to the poet’s mental projection, and this is the sphere to which the author of the sketch devoted most attention.
