Summary/Abstract: The main regularities determining the strength of Sarmatian clays, which constitute the majority of slopes in Republic of Moldova were examined. The peculiarities of soil behaviour under conditions of creep deformation were studied. An assessment of the strength of collapsible soils, which are widespread practically on the whole territory of the republic, was provided. The conditions for changes in their properties upon wetting of the collapsible layer was identified. The possibility of eliminating soil settlement using the RG-installation was studied. New data characterizing the physical and mechanical properties of collapsible silty clays compacted in this way have been obtained. The reliability of using the RG-installation to increase the bearing capacity of foundations has been proven. Results of the assessment the long-term stability of excavation slopes at a section of the M21 Chisinau-Dubasari roadway were presented. Recommendations were made for reducing landslide risk and mitigating soil settlement. The article was based on field and laboratory research, as well as calculations using the finite element method (FEM) implemented in the PLAXIS software package. The theoretical foundation is based on the key principles of the physico-technical theory of creep developed by Prof. N. Maslov.
