Summary/Abstract: Sludge from wastewater disposal and treatment is an unavoidable by-product of economic activity. Its environmental management is a key factor for the protection of the environment and for the development of a circular economy. The rules and regulations established by the EU for the use of sewage sludge in agriculture promote this use while regulating it to prevent harmful effects on human health and the environment. The subject of this paper is the policy of sewage sludge management in the EU and Bulgaria. In this context, the development is outlined and presented the legislative and regulatory framework for the use of sewage sludge in agriculture at the European and national levels. The main strategic and normative documents defining the framework for policy implementation in this area are reviewed. As a result of the review, gaps have been identified and the need to revise and/or supplement some of the criteria applied in the legislation has been identified.
