Summary/Abstract: Saint Sabbas the Sanctified has been considered one of founders of Christian monasticism. His monastery, called the Great Lavra and located near Jerusalem, played important role in the creation of the liturgical texts and particularly the Typikon in Byzantium. There are two extensive vitae of the saint written in Greek by Symeon Metaphrastes and Cyril of Scythopolis, which were translated and disseminated in medieval Slavonic manuscripts. The purpose of this research is to review the rules of life in the Great Lavra, early monasticism and the life of the monk St. Sabbas.
