Summary/Abstract: A survey of Hungarian industrial or applied arts is guided by historical factors, the practice of the craft , and social, political, and cultural movements. This survey can be divided logically into two parts, the first period lasting from the conquest of Hungary to the turn of the 19th–20th centuries, and the second from that time to our day. The first period, lasting about 900 years, included the whole Carpathian Basin as unified geographical area. We shall focus our att ention on the 100 years of development that are in direct contact with our day. This period describes the time that the signifi cance of Hungarian applied arts within the applied arts of Europe and the world became stabilized.
