Summary/Abstract: If a symbol is to be composed of two matching parts, then the first biblical mention of the vineyard and wine is indeed symbolic (Genesis 9: 20). Its true significance is revealed as soon as one connects it with the promise expressed at Noah’s birth (Genesis 5: 29). When Lamech names his firstborn Noah, he expresses his hope that his son will bring comfort to whole humankind. This hope is fulfilled with the planting of a vineyard yielding wine, which is as a sign of the return of the rule of the human being over the renewed earth.
