Summary/Abstract: Agriculture is a major driver of environmental externalities. With the aim of decreasing their intensity, different tools and assessment techniques are being developed. The Life cycle assessment (LCA) is a leading approach for evaluation of the environmental impact of various systems. Its application in agriculture has been steadily growing along with the improvement and further development of the underlying LCIA models, impact categories, indicators and factors. The aim of this report is to present the Life cycle assessment approach in the context of agriculture and to examine its applicability in the sector by making an overview of the main phases and impact categories of the approach, as well as the key critical areas relevant to its implementation in agriculture. In conclusion, the main strengths and weaknesses of the agricultural LCA are summarized and recommendations are made with regards to its optimal application in the sector.
