Summary/Abstract: In general, the sanitary state of the Romanian army was marked by strongly adverse elements such as important physical efforts made by the soldiers, difficulties on the troops’ supply lines, housing, equipment, transport and providing a minimum of hygienic conditions. At the same time, the heroism, dedication and selfsacrifice of the army’s sanitary service prevailed. The cold and rainy autumn of 1877, followed by a harsh winter, with heavy snowfall, made the situation significantly harsher especially at the siege of Plevna and in the battles around Vidin.
