Summary/Abstract: The essay recalls the Maria Theresa’s School Reform from 1774–1775 during which music education (M. E.) disappeared from the curriculum of the state-governed elementary schools in the Czech Kingdom. The low prestige of M. E. can be observed at Czech non-music schools even today. To improve the reputation of music education, it isnecessary to change its organization and content.
