Summary/Abstract: The article discusses different variables influencing reading competence in a foreign language, especially in the case of literary texts. The following categories of variables are the subject of discussion and criticism: ideological, procedural, textual, contextual, strategic and personal (features of personality, intellectual abilities, attitudes). The main aim of this analysis is to show the evolution of the concept of reading in a foreign language. The article also presents recommendations and some activities improving reading capacities during literature classes.
