Summary/Abstract: The 10-year experiment of the Commission for Public Oversight of Statutory Auditors (CPOSA) in the Republic of Bulgaria is being considered. Being presented are the changes in the current legislation for the 10-year period and the problems and challenges facing the auditing profession. Being examined is the function of CPOSA to protect the public interest by monitoring the activity of the statutory auditors especially in public interest entities. Addressed is also the systemic risk in CPOSA's functions in terms of quality control of audit work. The development of the auditing profession – institutional and professional in the 10-year period is discussed. Presented are the results from a sociological survey carried out among members of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants in Bulgaria on the work of CPOSA and its impact on the quality of audit activity.
