Summary/Abstract: The paper outlines the short history of the Department of Philology and Humanities in the Main School in Warsaw. Despite ambitious principles, unsurmountable difficulties that organizers of the department encountered shaped actual courses. The paper also presents an outline of the curricula. Several professors who offered more advanced or just better-prepared courses are named, as well as the most eminent alumni who continued their academic career in linguistics, among them J.N. Baudouin de Courtenay and A.A. Kryński, who both were professors of the University of Warsaw at the time, and L. Malinowski, professor of Jagiellonian University.
