Summary/Abstract: The essay attempts to explain the Hegel’s metaphor of modernity as a tragicomedy. Understanding of aesthetic categories of tragedy and comic quality by Hegel is explained. Then the views of J. Habermas and W. Benjamin are presented as two types of answer for the “tragicomic” condition of modernity suggested by Hegel. Both views try to save consensual “objectivism” of experience, defining the condition of a modern subject as a conflict between the possibilities of tragic sublimity and comic agreement.
