Summary/Abstract: The article discusses the functioning of NATO in 2019. It focuses on the internal tensionsin the organization due to growing divisions among the allies, particularly over burden--sharing and insuffi cient consultations between members; it also assesses their impacton NATO celebration of its 70th anniversary. It discusses in detail the positionsof the most vocal participants of intra-alliance debates: US, France, and Turkey.The article analyzes NATO’s internal military transformation and the strengtheningof its resilience, and deterrence and defence capabilities. It also discusses the operationalactivities of the Alliance, in particular in Afghanistan and Iraq. Finally, it presentsthe evolution of its relations with external partners in 2019, focusing on relations withRussia in the context of the expiration of the INF Treaty. It ends with an assessmentof future perspectives of cooperation between the allies.
