Summary/Abstract: The studied group are Poles in the Donbass (Donetsk and Luhansk region of Ukraine). According to official data from the population census in Ukraine in 2001, more than 6,000 people in the Donetsk and Luhansk region are Poles. The settlement of Poles in the Donbass began in the 19th century, and was both compulsory and – more often – voluntary. Poles currently living in the Donbas belong to the second or third generations. One of the key elements of their national and cultural identity is the memory of Polish origin.
