Summary/Abstract: The fall of the Iron Curtain and the USSR brought an end to the binary nature of international politics. This situation, in turn, forced the Russian Federation to rebuild its position as a powerful empire. The military conflicts in Georgia and the Ukraine, caused by Russia, facilitated a change in the defense policy of NATO and the European Union. Those changes, in turn, affect the Polish defense policy as well, resulting in the emerging initiatives undertaken by various Polish pro-defense movements as well as national defense organizations. In response to the actions of the “Russian separatists,” those organizations intend to emphasize the necessity of creating a contemporary theory of guerilla warfare which would enable action in different states of emergency. The article, then, attempts to answer the question to what degree such actions should be taken in order to strengthen the territorial defense of the state. Moreover, the author discusses the history of territorial defense in Poland as well as its functioning in the selected European countries and the United States.
