Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the significance of Georgi Sava Rakovski as inventor of a poetic-historical narrative that should present and explain in a synoptic and ultimate manner the core features of the Bulgarian cultural identity and the Bulgarian historical destiny. Four pivotal and interconnected elements of this narrative – ancientness, paganism, Balkan and folklore – are analysed in respect to their reception and reinterpretation in the seminal essay of Penčo Slavejkov “The folk-songs of the Bulgars” (1904).
