Summary/Abstract: ‘Märchen’ symbolise our dreams and desires, our fears and nightmares. Traditional ‘Kindermärchen’ with the motifs of devouring and being devoured have a striking similarity with early children’s games. The experience of going through a playful fright in these games or through traditional stories works because the frame is safe and secure. The thrill of experiencing fear in a secure environment accompanies the child’s development and helps to build up resilience and emotional resources.
