Summary/Abstract: North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) is a Cold War product as a counterweight to the Soviet Union. Since its establishment in April 1949,NATO has been a collective defense organization against external threats. Following the Second World War, twelve countries1 came together to prevent a third world war and signed the North Atlantic Treaty in Washington. Promoting stability and well-being in the North Atlantic area and safeguarding the freedom, common heritage, and civilization of the member countries were stated as the mandate of the organization.
