Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the region of Imotska Krajina, or the so-called Imota, as a mythical homeland in selected poetry and prose works by Petar Gudelj. The concept of periphery will be considered, on the one hand, in terms of the geographic position of the mentioned area and its social and political “life on the edge” as well as in terms of its reflection in literary works while, on the other hand, the periphery will be recognized in the long-term Gudelj’s marginalization on the Croatian literary scene and in the elements of his poetics; “self-generation,” but also relying on tradition and oral literature. The analysis will show how the controversies and the contrast of the karst periphery make a fertile ground for (re)-building (literary) identity.
