Summary/Abstract: The present article analyses the metalanguage commentaries of the Habsburg officials establishing the German language as the language of instruction in Galician schools while introducing the Act of Law “Allgemeine Schulordnung” after the year 1774. Their communications show similarities to the language narration which appeared in the intra-German dispute about the so-called “Sprachverbesserung” (language improvement). The issues that were raised in the German countries in the 18th century during the discourse promoting the value of the native language relative to its emancipation from Latin and French in science and education, and in relation to the regional competition for the “proper German”, assumed expansive forms within the range that was adapted in order to present the means for the language policy in Galician schools.
