Summary/Abstract: Although hate speech has often been considered as a popular phenomenon, there is a lack of research in terms of its contradictory characteristics. The current article is focused on hate speech and the ways in which it affects the media environment. A survey based on citizens’ perceptions about various hate speech comments voiced by Bulgarian politicians explores their willingness to report the content, post a positive/negative comment or use emoticon in order to provide reactions on Facebook. Another goal is to identify some of the key aspects of the hate speech phenomenon and the ways they reflect on the political discourse. As a result of the survey, some of the reasons behind such rhetoric have been analyzed.
